Until now the options for UK web domain names has mostly focused around .co.uk and .org.uk. There are several other less widely used 'uk' endings.

From next year a shorter .uk option will be available.

Nominet, the managers of the UK domain space, announced today that from next year .uk will be made available. Current holders of .co.uk and .org.uk will be offered the equivalent .uk name and have five years to accept before it is made available generally.

Any new and unique .uk domain name will be available on a first-come, first served basis from launch.

Pricing is in line with current .co.uk (£3.50 per single year, or £2.50 for multiple years).

The actually launch date in 2014 is still unknown however Nominet will announce this by February 2014.

Nominet overseen the management of all UK domain names (.co.uk, .org.uk, .net.uk, .me.uk, .plc.uk, .ltd.uk and sch.uk)
