Picnik arrived in 2005 and was a ground breaking online photo editing tool.  Using the latest web technology users could upload photos and perform quite sophisticated image editing.  Not on the same level as the likes of Photoshop or Gimp, but certainly more than adequate for most.  The fact it was done in a web browser made it accessible to all.

Picnik offered a free a premium account -- the latter allowing more sophisticated photo editing.  I have been a premium user since early 2007.

Google clearly saw the potential and duly acquired Picnik for an undisclosed sum in March 2010.  Since then there has been some speculation as to what would happen.  Fast forward to late 2011 and the Picnik features suddenly appeared in Google+ allowing users to manipulate their uploaded photos.

Today Google emailed all users announcing the demise of the Picnik brand -- as from 19 April 2012 it will be no more.  Those already on a paid premium account will receive a full years refund.

Picnik premium is now available to all for free until 19 April 2012 if you wish to experiment -- www.picnik.com

Google only offer the following on its future

We are excited by the photo-editing fun we have already brought to Google products, like Google+, where you can find many of your favorite Picnik effects in Creative Kit.
