FFOS LogoMozilla, the organisation behind the Firefox browser, have announced further details on the first mobile phones to run the Firefox OS.

The phones are being described as "preview phones" aimed at encouraging third parties to "bring the power of the web to mobile".

Currently two devices are under development by Spanish firm Geeksphone in conjunction with Telefonica (O2).

The "Keon" device will apparently have a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz CPU with 512MB of RAM, 3-megapixel camera, 1580 mAh battery and microSD card slot.

The "Peak" has a higher specification -- 4.3-inch qHD IPS Multitouch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz processor with 512MB of RAM, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front camera, and 1800 mAh battery.

Firefox OS will have a tough time ahead.  The big players are Android, iOS, Windows and Blackberry however several new mobile OS's are due this year, including an offering from Ubuntu.

The OS may also prove yet another challenge for developers.  Although development will be based on HTML5, Mozilla also say there will be "new Mozilla-proposed standard APIs" -- which basically reads as more non-standard web based code!

Is there room for yet another mobile OS? Another App store?  More development environments?

Preview devices are expected in February 2013, but no details of a general release.
