Happy Birthday AndroidToday, 5 November, seems to be the agreed birth date for Android as we know it today. So let's wish it a huge Happy Birthday -- five years old today. AND 75% market share too.

There are many dates which could be assumed as Android's birth:

  • Android Inc was formed in October 2003 and the key aim was to develop "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences"
  • Google acquired Android Inc in August 2005 with the aim of offering an operating system for mobile devices to manufacturers.
  • On 5 November 2007 the Open Handset Alliance was formed -- a consortium (including Google) of 84 (currently) "technology and mobile companies who have come together to accelerate innovation in mobile and offer consumers a richer, less expensive, and better mobile experience." It was on the inaugural day that the first product of the Alliance was unveiled -- Android
  • The first consumer phone to run Android was the HTC Dream, released on October 22, 2008

It is generally agreed that Android as we know it was started by the Open Handset Alliance team -- 5 years ago today. It is perhaps also timely that today the IDC reveal that three out of four smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2012 featured Google’s Android operating system -- a 75% market share compared to 57% for the same period last year.
