Facebook are looking into ways to engaged under-13s in the worlds largest social network.

Currently, Facebook users must be 13 years of age or over (http://www.facebook.com/legal/terms Section 4), however many simply do not report their correct date of birth to get around this restriction.  In a study conducted last year it is estimated that almost 8 million users are under 13, with five million under 10 years old.

Facebook are considering linking the account of under-13s to a parent.  The parent would be required to approve the childs friends and any applications they have access to.  This would further increase the current 900+ million users on Facebook, and also open up revenue streams whereby children can make in-app purchases against their Parents account.

Google+ initially launched to over 18s, however in January 2012 it dropped this to 13, but again faces the same verification issues as Facebook.

Twitter also attempt to enforce the 13 year rule!
